Radiology

RadiologyThe Radiology department at Smith County Memorial Hospital encompasses seven modalities offering a full line of services for impatient and outpatient care.  Procedures can be scheduled on weekdays, and technologists staff the department 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a radiologist on call for emergencies.

Our department is compiled of dedicated and caring staff members with over 70 years combined imaging experience.  All staff members are registered with the ARRT and hold Kansas licenses.

Below is a brief overview of the seven radiology services that we provide and when these services are available.

Mammography

A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray test that produces an image of the inner breast tissue. This x-ray is used to visualize normal and abnormal tissue in the breast. All mammogram's are interpreted by a board certified radiologist.

Most Common Procedures

  • Bilateral Screening Mammogram
  • Diagnostic Mammogram

Availability
Monday thru Friday 8 am to 3 pm by appointment.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a diagnostic testing procedure that uses magnetic fields to create pictures of your body in all three anatomical directions: sagittal, coronal, and axial. It is a painless, non-invasive way to obtain detailed information to help your doctor evaluate your health.  MRI does not use any radiation to create images.

Most Common Procedures

  • Brain
  • Spine
  • Joints

Availability
Provided by Shared Medical Services each Thursday.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is used when a radioactive isotope that has been tagged to image a specific organ. The isotope is injected into a vein. After an appropriate wait time, the patient is scanned and images are acquired. Images are interpreted by a radiologist.

Most Common Procedures

  • Bone Scan
  • Lung Scan
  • Thyroid Scan
  • Gallbladder Scan
  • Heart Scan

Availability
Service provided by Brian LGH on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Monday of each month.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Positron Emission Tomography, or PET, is a diagnostic test that is a painless, non-invasive way to help your doctor evaluate your health.  Typically, your doctor has seen an irregularity on another type of test, such as a CT or MRI scan, and wants further investigation.  PET has been proven to be effective in the diagnosis of many diseases.  It is part of a field of medicine called nuclear medicine.  PET creates special images that show the functioning, or metabolism of your body’s cells.  Abnormal metabolism levels in the cells may indicate the presence of disease.  Our PET services are provided by a mobile PET scanner unit.

Most Common Procedures

  • Whole Body Scan

Availability
Service provided by Shared Medical Services every-other Monday.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a medical method of diagnosing disease using high frequency sound waves. Sound waves are directed into the body from a transducer. The sound waves make contact with internal body soft tissue structures and are reflected back through the transducer to the Ultrasound machine. From there, they are electronically converted into a picture/image. The images are evaluated by a radiologist who dictates a report.

Most Common Procedures

  • Abdomen
  • OB/GYN
  • Pelvis
  • Heart (Echocardiogram)
  • Vascular
  • Breast
  • Thyroid

Availability
General ultrasound studies are available Monday thru Friday 8am to 2 pm, emergent studies are available upon physician request after hours.  Vascular and ECHO studies are provided by Hays Medical Center each Monday.

X-ray/Radiography

X-Ray/Radiography is a diagnostic testing procedure that gathers information about the inside of your body by using ionizing radiation.  It is a painless way to obtain detailed information that helps your doctor assess your medical condition.

Most Common Procedures

  • Chest x-ray
  • Bone x-ray

Availability
General radiography exams are available weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm, emergent studies are available upon physician request after hours.

Computerized Tomography (CT)

CT is a diagnostic testing procedure which combines many x-ray images with the use of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and, if needed, three-dimensional images of the internal organs and structures of the body.  State of the art CT equipment allows technologists to perform even the most advanced CT examinations.

Most Common Procedures

  • CT Head
  • CT Chest
  • CT Abdomen

CT exams are available weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm, emergent studies are available upon physician request after hours.
